I have received an undergraduate degree in Zoology from the University of Calcutta in 2004 and a postgraduate degree in Zoology with specialization in Environmental Biology from the Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan in 2006. Thereafter, I joined as a research fellow in Wildlife Institute of India to study the influence of climatic fluctuation and anthropogenic pressures on abundance of alpine mammals and birds. In 2008, I enrolled for Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. B.S. Adhikari and Dr. G.S. Rawat at Wildlife Institute of India to study the habitat and behavioural ecology of a high altitude lagomorph (relative of rabbit) Royle’s Pika (Ochotona roylei) in Western Himalaya. After finishing Ph.D., I joined Dr. Farah Ishtiaq at CES as a DBT-IISC research associate to study population genetics using Royle’s pika as a model system.
My broad research interests include alpine small mammal ecology and behaviour with emphasis on occupancy pattern, survival and its response to climatic fluctuations. As a recipient of Fulbright-Nehru doctoral fellowship 2010-2011 at University of Colorado, Boulder, I explored the possibility of reduced foraging efficiency in American Pikas due to climate change in the last three decades across various latitudes in Rocky Mountains using historical datasets. I was one of the recipients of the Ravi Sankaran Inlaks Foundation Internship 2012 in Conservation Biology, which aided me greatly in learning the nuances of systematic review protocols and data analysis at the Centre for Evidence Based Conservation, Bangor University,Wales,UK. My internship was focused on effective use of evidence based conservation practice in climate change research for mountain ecosystem.
Since June 2009 I am working as a member of the IUCN species survival commission (SSC) Lagomorph Specialist Group. I was one of the founding members of Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN), have worked as facilitator for its education and capacity building-working group from 2012-2013.
