Abstract:

In the primitively eusocial wasp Ropalidia marginata, each female has an option to leave her natal nest and initiate or join a new nest. My thesis will revolve round this particular option and will address questions related to the behaviour of the individuals before they leave the nest as well as soon after they initiate a nest. The first part of the study will try to distinguish between the individuals that leave the nest and those who stay back based on their behavioural profiles. The second part will focus on the new nests and initiated and address such question as the effect of increasing number of foundresses on the rate of nest growth and productivity. Also it will investigate the emergence of non-reproductive division of labour in newly initiated nests with more than one worker. In the third part, I will try to answer whether every individual in a colony can initiate new nests when given an opportunity to do so. Through this study I will try to unravel some of the mysteries that are associated with the nest foundation behaviour of Ropalidia marginata.
