Vaibhav's Protanilla, Protanilla flamma a small subterranean ant measuring just 2.5mm has been described from the forests of Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary in Goa, India. This ant is completely blind and uses chemical cues for navigating in their dark subterranean world. The species is named after Prof. Vaibhav Chindarkar from Goa. The word “vaibhav” means eminence – like the glow of a flame in the dark in Sanskrit and incidentally, this species is also yellowish-orange in colour and hence, the species is named "flamma".

Degradation of these vital ecosystems has been the primary cause for increasing water insecurity, raising the need for integrated solutions to freshwater management.

It gives us great pleasure to welcome Dr. (Dr.) Umesh Srinivasan to CES. Umesh joins as Assistant Professor after completing a postdoc at Princeton University, prior to which he completed his PhD at NCBS. The doctor in parenthesis refers to an MBBS he did before he became obsessed with ecology and conservation!

Burgeoning dependence on fossil fuels for transport and industrial sectors has been posing challenges such as depletion of fossil fuel reserves, enhanced greenhouse gas footprint, with the imminent changes in the climate, etc. This has necessitated an exploration of sustainable, eco-friendly and carbon neutral energy alternatives.

Council of the Institute in its meeting held on 21 December 2019, has been pleased to confer Alumni Award for Excellence in Research for Science for the year 2020, jointly on Prof. Borges and Prof. E. Arunan, Dept. of Inorganic & Physical Chemistry. The President of the Court of the Institute will formally present the award at the meeting of the Court, scheduled to be held on Friday, the 13 March 2020, in the Faculty Hall of the Institute.
