Launch of the 'Digital Flora of Peninsular India'

The Centre for Ecological Sciences at IISc has a herbarium with a large collection of over 16000 species of plants from Karnataka, Western and Eastern Ghats and other parts of peninsular India. Over the past twelve years, Prof. Sankara Rao, a retired professor from the Biochemistry department of IISc and an expert botanist, and his small team of volunteers, have been digitizing the entire collection and produced a Digital Flora of Karnataka that is freely available online (http://florakarnataka.ces.iisc.ac.in).

Sanjeeta Sharma Pokharel awarded Nepal's prestigious Nepal Bidya Bhushan Padak.

Nepal President's award to Sanjeeta

Dr. Sanjeeta Sharma Pokharel, a CES alumnus, has been awarded one of Nepal's prestigious honours "Nepal Bidya Bhushan Padak" (KA category, year 2018) for her PhD thesis work. The award was given by the President of Nepal, Bidya Devi Bhandari on the occasion of the National Education Day and International Literacy Day, on behalf of the Government of Nepal (Ministry of Science and Technology).

Anindita Brahma wins Fulbright-Nehru and Marie Curie fellowships

We are delighted that Dr Anindita Brahma, an alumnus of CES who did her PhD with Prof Raghavendra Gadagkar, has been awarded two prestigious fellowships: Marie Curie fellowship (Europe) and Fulbright-Nehru fellowship (US).

She has chosen to take up the Fulbright fellowship for her postdoctoral research work. She will be working with Dr Daniel J.C. Kronauer, The Rockefeller University, New York on a project titled "Modulators of the route towards social parasitism: a study with the clonal raider ant Ooceraea biri"

Jaideep Joshi awarded a prestigious Marie Curie fellowship

We are delighted that Dr Jaideep Joshi, an alumnus of CES who did his PhD with Prof Vishwesha Guttal, has been awarded a prestigious Marie Curie fellowship.

Jaideep will be pursuing his postdoctoral research in Austria/UK, mentored by Prof Ulf Dieckmann (IIASA, Vienna, Austria) and Prof Iain Colin Prentice (Imperial College London). His research topic is “Assessing the global vulnerability of forests to drought using Plant Functional Trait Evolution (Plant-FATE)”.

The Student Conference on Conservation Science (SCCS) – Bengaluru brings together young researchers in the science and practice of biodiversity conservation. The conference facilitates interaction, encourages exchange of research ideas and methods, sharing of knowledge and experience related to conserving wildlife and helps build contacts and capacity. As a sister conference to SCCS-Cambridge, SCCS-Bengaluru focuses on attracting student participants, primarily from countries in South and South-east Asia, and Africa.
